[Greece] Imprisonment is a death sentence

On April 9, 2020, Azizel Deniroglou dies in a prison in Thebes. She had had health problems for many days. On the fateful night, she asked for help due to fever and difficulty in breathing. As usual, the service did not pay any attention to her, as a result of which Azizel became another victim of the murderous regime. The reflexes of the State were once again indicative, with the gen. Secretary of anti-crime policy Nikolaou announcing death from “pathological causes”, without waiting for either an examination for the corona or an autopsy.

Azizel’s death confirms the law and the urgency of the demands of the country’s many prisoners, who are calling for measures to protect them due to the Covid 19 pandemic. From simple information on precautions that can be taken to access gloves, masks and antiseptics, to granting leave to sick inmates and disinfection of the prisons. Their main demand, however, is the decongestion of prisons, through the release of vulnerable groups, the elderly or prisoners who have served much of their sentences. Demands that seem self-evident when we talk about places where hundreds of people are stacked in conditions of misery – without access to medicines and medical care, where falling sick almost automatically means transmitting the virus to all prisoners – measures that in a number of countries have already been implemented.

The State ‘s response to the above is as expected. It imposes a number of measures against prisoners’ rights, such as stopping permits and visits, as well as prohibiting the receiving of any object (books, food, etc.) from individuals in solidarity, or their families. Otherwise, it shows complete indifference to their demands, in addition to commitments to decongestion that are never implemented (with the exception of course of the release of former PASOK minister Papantoniou) and assurances from government officials that everything is going well. This, of course, only in cases where prisoners’ requests remain within the “permitted framework”. In cases where prisoners are mobilizing and rebelling, refusing food or to return to their cells, the treatment changes. Threats, calls for “disciplinary action”, retaliatory transfers, the closure of exercise yards, raids by EKAM and MAT and relentless beatings. This happened in the prisons in Korydallos, Larissa, Chania and even in Thebes, in the uprising of the detained woman Azizel on the occasion of her death, where the MAT dragged the prisoners into their cells, sent many to the hospital and did not hesitate to beat a woman held who suffered from epilepsy.

This treatment, no matter how outrageous, does not surprise us. Prisons have always been places where all the people considered problematic by the State have been thrown out of reasons of revenge and control of society through fear. Survival inside them has been and is a secondary issue. After all, the only concern on the part of the State is that these people will not “contaminate”, in general, metaphorically, but at the present time also literally, the social body. That’s why they bury them in tons of cement so that their voices are not even heard.

With the city streets being handed over to cops and people locked in their homes bombarded daily with fear of the “invisible enemy”, the State thinks it is playing in an empty stadium. It obliges employees to work exhaustive hours without any protection against the virus (hospitals, pharmacies, supermarkets, deliveries), gives a minimum wage allowance for some groups of workers and leaves the new wave of laid-off workers to find their own way. The supposed protection measure for employees is equally volatile, as it only requires bosses to guarantee the same number of employees when they reopen their companies and businesses, without any requirement to retain the same employees or the salaries they paid. At the same time, it is bombarding us through the TV channels with the narrative of “individual responsibility”, trying to cover up the fact that the dismantled health system, without sufficient medical equipment (gloves, masks, ICU) is completely insufficient to deal with a pandemic of this magnitude. As for the prisoners, it counts on the fear and indifference it has been trying to cultivate in society for years, as well as on the increased possibilities of direct repression against the struggling sections of society, so that it can leave the prisoners to their fate. And in the case of Azizel, the first (if not the only) concern is to ensure that the image of the government fully in control of the issue of the pandemic is not tarnished.

For us, Azizel’s case is clear. With or without corona, her death is another State-sponsored murder. A completely conscious murder, the causes of which are not limited to the attitude of the guards on duty that day, but are the result of the very condition of the confinement and the misery that it brings. Any such murder is yet another moment when the State is stripped of its democratic face and shows what is hidden under its vulgar narrative of just punishments and “imprisonment”: the harsh condemnation of people in miserable conditions of survival and death.

In the difficult times we are in, we choose not to be “all together” as the government and the media are trying to convince us. We are on the side of the oppressed but also the “invisible” of this society, those who even in “all together” are excluded, imprisoned in prisons and detention centres, homeless, drug addicts, etc. Against the pseudo-solidarity created by the State, the crumbs of sponsorships from various companies and capitalists, against individualism and social cannibalism, we propose the solidarity of the oppressed.

Solidarity with the struggles of the prisoners

Immediate decongestion of prisons

Let’s stand in solidarity against the pandemic of corona and capitalism

Fire to all cells

IN-OUT  anti-info and solidarity group for political prisoners

PS : 800 masks sent to the prison of Larissa by comrades of the Squat of Dougrou in larissa city, remain unavailable with the excuse from the chief screw that they could be used in an insurrection. This is the State and the way it treats prisoners.

[Viterbo, Italy] A letter from a prisoner locked up in Mammagialla

This is what the health of the prisoners is worth…

From a letter of a prisoner locked up in Mammagialla

On 25th March news came of a screw on duty at the prison of Mammagialla resulting positive to the corona virus. The news was given to the prisoners officially, assuring them that the cop had been isolated. The only measure taken to prevent contagion inside was to give tests to the other 36 screws. According to the prison governor, they all came back negative. At this point it could be said that 581 prisoners are crammed into Mammagialla, which has places for 431 people. So each screw watches about fifty prisoners.

Obviously, in spite of the already considerable overcrowding, the comings and goings of newcomers and transferred prisoners never ceases, they only have their temperature checked in a tent set up outside the prison. No swabs are being taken and after a few days’ isolation, «fine, off to the incubator for covid-19, the sections». The prison governor informed the prisoners that a section had been set up near the chief’s office where eventual positive cases would be contained (which, if swabs are not being done?). Doubts naturally arise, given the constant overcrowding: where has this “section” been set up?

For now they’re giving us sops: the cells stay open many hours a day, “free” showers every day, “unlimited” telephone calls also to  non-notified numbers, “new” mattresses and perhaps also a couple of channels more on the fucking “lies-vision”.

In spite of the many requests for house arrest, responses are slow to arrive, even for those with only a month left to do. «A surveillance judge made his appearance via web dispensing his proverbial wisdom to us poor sinners, but the delays concerning early releases, syntheses and various assessments are a sword of Damocles hanging over us».

As far as protective equipment is concerned, «there are no masks, not for everybody at least. Some that look like spare parts for the “swiffer” [floor mop] were provided and I won’t say where they ended up».

[Prison of Pau ,France] A letter from Anarchist Comrade Damien Camélio

Hi compas and thanks for your support.

I got arrested for shoplifting while I was on the run. The cops realised I was wanted and put me in prison. In fact, what happened is that the cops I’d publicly denounced after they beat me up had fomented a retaliation. They filed a complaint against me for contempt and rebellion. I was never called to court because the cops falsified the papers notifying me of the trial.
Likewise, they falsified the notification of the court’s decision of 5 months’ prison.
So, I found myself without realising it on the run with no possibility of defence or appeal against the decision or for an adjustment of sentence. The day the cops got their hands on me, they threw me in prison, that’s it.
I refuse the solidarity of all those who dissociate it from the attack on reality.

[Genoa, Italy] Solidarity with the prisoners of the Marassi prison

Inferno Urbano, 1st April 2020
Translated by act for freedom now!
—————————————————–
We receive and publish:
They say that the health of a democracy can be found in the health of its prisons. So we can say that Italy is a patient in a deep coma. Only in 2019, 143 people died [in prison] of whom 53 committed suicide, and in 2020 we’ve already 41 deaths of which 13 suicides. So much for prisoners’ rehabilitation!
Far be it for us to think that prisons are places of recovery and rehabilitation; as far as we’re concerned, these structures are to be destroyed. A death in prison, whatever its causes, is to be attributed to the state of imprisonment, to those who institute and run these  concrete hells: the State! The prisoners’ protests at the beginning of March gave us courage and strength, so we thought it right to let them know that there are people outside who support them with small gestures of solidarity. At the beginning of the month we went outside the abominable walls of the Marassi prison several times, making our complicity heard with firecrackers, smoke bombs and unfurling banners.
During the exercise yard time, we threw tennis balls over the wall containing a text with information and solidarity with the prisoners in struggle and updates on what’s going on in the other Italian prisons.
The response to our first attempts was always immediate and passionate, in time it got weaker, probably due to pressure from within the prison system. We felt that penal questions weren’t strong enough deterrents to extinguish our desire to be close to prisoners in struggle at this moment.
OUR LOVE OF FREEDOM IS STRONGER THAN ALL AUTHORITY!
FIRE TO THE PRISONS!
FREEDOM FOR ALL!

[Belgium] Riot in Anderlecht area of Brussels after local 19 year old killed by cops

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOysiIKRPVo
Enraged youth from the Anderlecht area of the capital city Brussels, Belgium rioted 11/4/20, attacking cop vehicles and hurling projectiles at the cops, injuring one and beating up another. The riot was triggered when a cop patrol pursued a 19 year old on a scooter because he refused to stop for a curfew check. He hit an oncoming cop vehicle head on and died on the spot. Hundreds of angry youth from the local area instantly took to the street after a callout on social media attacking the cops who had arrived to reinforce those involved in the killing. Several cop vehicles were set on fire, one youth liberated a gun from a vehicle, shooting it in the air as he ran off.
The local youth has been named as Adil and already the media is doing the state’s dirty work by sending out its appeal for calm, using his family as a weapon to suppress the anger of a local youth’s murder and against the curfew. The cops have further reinforced the area today (Sunday), even with water cannon because they fear that the area will breakout in further rioting. Belgium has been in a four-week curfew in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus epidemic.
This is a clear sign of the riots and insurrection to come that has now arrived in fortress Europe, after other outbreaks of rebellion in other parts of the world, we are even aware of scum media clearly attempting along with the authorities to suppress any outbreaks of rebellion against the coronavirus curfews*. It is only a moment of time before the global backlash erupts.
First Wuhan, Now Brussels, Insurrection Everywhere!
*Riots have erupted in Bristol, China & Palestine, even telephone towers burnt around prison island UK, along with reported raids on supermarkets in the South of Italy in response to ‘lockdown measures’ (curfew!)

Operation Arca: Solidarity with the accused.

On May 13, 2019, two comrades were arrested in Madrid; their houses and the squatted anarchist space La Emboscada were searched by the police. Since then, they have been awaiting trial under the accusation of terrorism, being investigated in relation to different actions against repressive bodies, banks, political parties and real estate.

We do not care if they are innocent or guilty, if they are criminals or terrorists. We do not want to legitimize their spectacle, nor a judicial and political system that the State has created for it’s own interests. The only definition that we recognize, and in which we recognize ourselves in complicity, is that of being anarchists. Because we fight to recover our life and our autonomy against this authoritarian system.

For us, the best way to show solidarity is to continue with the struggles we share, that is why so many companions, beaten daily by the system, are present in them and inspire them. A wink of complicity, be they criminals, terrorists or simply anarchists.

Their cages don’t stop us

Athens: CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH DETAINED WOMEN AT PETROU RALLI PRISON

CALL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH DETAINED WOMEN AT PETROU RALLI PRISON

Visits to the Petrou Ralli detention centre have now been banned due to measures relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, all the essential items that you donated were packaged and delivered to the detained women on Thursday, March 26th. The same will be done, wherever possible, throughout April and May… until the detention centre empties!

It is murderous that in a time of global pandemic with thousands dead, that so many are being marginalized and forcibly crammed into filthy confinement, and that at this moment in whole regions of the world and places here in Greece (for example, at the refugee extermination camp in Ritsona, where 62 of the 3,000 residents were tested last week and 20 found positive in COVID-19), people are being quarantined. You know almost nothing about the situation – it’s as if you do not exist, living in a state of exception.

We are calling on you, individuals and self-organized communities from the fighting solidarity network from below; on you who always stand by the vulnerable and marginalized. If you would like to assist by donating items from the list below, you can send us a message at our Facebook inbox/messenger or email: spiti.gynaikon@gmail.com to co-ordinate and discuss where to deliver donations. We have 6 different addresses in various areas of Athens, where they can be delivered or collected.

For our part, we continue to work to inform and support the detained women who contact us by phone, advising them about risks, cautions and claiming their rights. We also support and encourage as much as possible those who have managed to be released from the hellhole of detention and request our assistance.

Below is a list of necessary items for personal hygiene and strengthening the immune system of detainees as a precautionary measure against the deadly COVID-19 virus and the many other germs in the filthy toilets, cells and common spaces of this building which is completely unfit for human habitation. with accurate information, health services, amenities, and dignity.

Solidarity and self-organization are our weapons!
